Disney's Favorite Way to Bump Off a Villain

Quick: What's Disney's favorite way of killing off an animated baddie?

Not all Disney villains die, of course. Some are imprisoned and some (mainly in the comedies) are merely humiliated. Then there's Pinocchio, a very dark film in which five major villains get off with no punishment at all -- because the message of Pinocchio is watch out!

When Disney storytellers do kill off a creep, however, they've definitely got one preferred method. Let's take a look at the list of all the Disney animated villain death scenes:

Warning: Spoilers for everything through Brave. To qualify, each villain must have been a Disney or Pixar animated character (or at least animated in their big death scene).

Snow White's Evil Queen - Plummets to her death.
Cinderella's Lucifer the Cat - Plummets to his death.
Lady & the Tramp's Rat - Mauled by Tramp.
Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent - Stabbed through heart...then plummets.
Return to Oz's Gnome King - Poisoned by a chicken egg.
The Black Cauldron's Horned King - Microwaved by cauldron.
Great Mouse Detective's Ratigan - Plummets to his death.
Oliver and Co's Bill Sykes - Struck by train.
Roger Rabbit's Judge Doom - Dissolved by dip.
Little Mermaid's Ursula - Stabbed through the heart by a ship.
Rescuers Down Under's McLeech - Plummets to his death.
Beauty and the Beast's Gaston - Plummets to his death.
Nightmare Before Christmas's Oogie Boogie - Unraveled.
The Lion King's Scar - Plummets, survives, eaten by henchmen.
Hunchback's Frolo - Plummets to his death.
A Bug's Life's Hopper - Eaten by baby birds.
Mulan's Shan Yu - Blown Up.
Tarzan's Clayton - Plummets to his (hanging) death.
Dinosaur's Carnotaur - Plummets to his death.
The Incredibles' Syndrome - Sucked into jet engine.
Atlantis's Rourke - Turns into crystal monster, then explodes.
Meet the Robinson's Doris - Erased by a paradox.
Up's Muntz - Plummets to his death.
The Princess & the Frog's Dr. Facilier - Dragged to Underworld by Voodoo Spirits.
Tangled's Gothel - Ages and plummets.
Winnie the Pooh's Backson - trampled by Eeyore (kidding).
Brave's Mor'du - Crushed by Menhir.

That's quite a legacy of imaginative and strange fictional deaths, but we certainly have a clear winner:

Yes, Disney's favorite way of killing a bad guy is the classic "Death Plummet." We can also see that this trend is a fairly recent development, though it all started back with the very first animated feature.

The DP is a great way to provide a happy ending without having the hero or heroine actually have to perform the act. In fact the only Disney heroes who have actually intentionally killed their foes are Tramp, Prince Phillip, Eddie Valiant, Prince Eric, Jack Skellington and Queen Elinor.

I don't know about you, but it seems to me that Scar got the most grisly villain demise: eaten alive by his own henchmen. Now, that's what I call a rotten day.

Notes: This is an update of an article that appeared in 2010 on our previous blog, Astonished Walrus. The photo at the top was taken at Disneyland's 1983 parade, "Flights of Fantasy." We'll have more about that parade in an upcoming post.

Good point on this. And somehow miraculously, despite their plummeting death, the characters are available for meet and greets in the parks!

    1. Yes! :) And have you seen those Cinderella video sequels where apparently no one told the writers Lucifer died in the original?
