Reviewing the Competition: How Peter Pan Might Hold a Clue to Adventure Time's Success

Adventure TIme Review Peter Pan Wizards Mad Libs similarities
Have you ever wondered what an average day in Neverland is like for Peter Pan? Sleep late, fry up some crocodile eggs, fight pirates, play games, visit mermaids, fight pirates, have lunch on the volcano, fight pirates....

In a nutshell, that's the drawing power of Cartoon Network's smash hit animated series, Adventure Time: Its hero, Finn, lives every boy's dream of the perfect treehouse-based life. Blend Neverland with the post-apocalyptic world of Ralph Bakshi's Wizards, add heaps of Mad-Libs random craziness, and you've got a show full of endless story possibilities.

If you're an Adventure Time fan, think about it a moment:

King Leonidas in 2008

King Leonidas Disney Electrical Parade DCA California calliope
It's everyone's favorite showboating monarch, King Leonidas! He might be a bit of a tyrant--and his soccer sportsmanship's a bit iffy--but he can play that calliope like no one's business (and he knows it!) Working the crowd for more laughs and cheers than any other character in the Electrical Parade, he's the one Bedknobs and Broomsticks character who's remained in the public eye through sheer charisma (or maybe no one's got the nerve to hand him a pink slip.)

This picture was taken in 2008 during the Electrical Parade's DCA run, just before the show headed to Walt Disney World.

In the interest of good taste, I cropped this photo a bit: King Leo had just plopped back down on his calliope bench, and his tail was hanging in a really awkward, family-inappropriate spot. Yeah, that's right--Mouse Troop's protecting the dignity of cartoon royalty!

The Lost Carousel Horses

Disneyland Horse heads gift cart kiosk Fantasyland carousel
Somehow, it seems easier to appreciate the beauty of carousel horses when they're separated from the herd. The faces on these two Fantasyland steeds project noble grace and dignity -- so much, in fact, that I'm a bit reluctant to post the next photo...

Ah, well, here goes...

Strange Things 7: Swiss Family Gummi Bears Edition

Welcome to another round of Strange Things; Disney tunes that are offbeat, obscure or performed in unexpected ways. All these tracks (except our video pick) are available on iTunes and Amazon MP3. Today we've got Lions in Norway, Kim Possible in Germany, Swiss Family Ostriches and rocking Gummi Bears. But first...Tikis!

Tiki Room Strange Things offbeat Disney tunes Hawaiian Chant
TRACK: HAWAIIAN WAR CHANT
ALBUM: Hugo Winter - Tiki Room!

This is not the soundtrack to a certain famous Disney attraction. It does, however, contain a terrific, jazzy rendition of "Hawaiian War Chant," which is used in the Enchanted Tiki Room's finale. A bit of a stretch, but I love this album cover. Now I have a craving for pineapple...and Orange Crush...

Next, we have two very different takes on the Gummi Bears theme...

Fantasyland at Night

Mad Tea Party Disneyland Teacups night spinning lanterns
Disneyland's Fantasyland takes on a unique energy late at night. Because much of it's blocked off during fireworks (as the castle hosts some of the pyrotechnics), the last hours of park operation find the area bustling with relaxed, tired-but-happy guests trying to get in one last ride on a childhood favorite before closing time.

King Triton Conquers Paradise Pier

King Triton Triton's Fountain Grotto Garden Disneyland Mermaid
After beginning his theme park career quietly at Disneyland, King Triton has moved on to Disney California Adventure in a big way; he holds the record for getting his face on more DCA attractions than any other character. Somehow, he's managed to take over Paradise Pier!

As seen in the above photo, Triton once reigned over his own jumping fountain garden, making sure the humans visiting his daughter's meet n' greet behaved themselves.

When the grotto was bulldozed to make room for Pixie Hollow, the impressive Triton statue found a new home across the way as the crowning exterior centerpiece of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure.

Of course, Triton already had a presence in DCA'a seaside amusement park. He's got his very own sea-creature carousel.

And he guards his daughter's restaurant.

Okay, this one looks a bit freaky and began as an unnamed guardian for Wolfgang Puck's Avalon Cove restaurant.  Now that Ariel's moved in, however, we can only assume it's now supposed to be Triton...or the uncle we never hear about...

And, of course, King Triton also appears in the finale of The Little Mermaid ride.

At any rate, Paradise Pier is certainly well-protected. At this point, maybe Triton Pier would be a better name for the  place! In fact, he could burst out of the waters of Paradise Bay to host World of Color! The place needs a fun backstory...maybe Ariel's dad should simply take over.

1994: Disneyland's Amazing Lion King Celebration

Lion King Celebration Disneyland Simba float parade
1994 saw the debut of the greatest daytime parade Disneyland has ever presented: The Lion King Celebration. This amazing production combined music, dance, puppetry, audioanimatronics, acrobatics, radio-controlled creatures, live percussion and audience interaction into a joyful fusion of Disney animation and African art that was unlike any previous park attraction.

Employing nearly 100 performers and operators, the production became an instant smash-hit for the park, prompting many return visits and repeat viewings.

Sunday Signage: King Triton's Carousel

King Triton's Carousel Triton Paradise Pier
King Triton's Carousel may not be the most thrilling ride at Disney California Adventure, but it sure has a first-rate sign welcoming guests aboard. Have you ever seen Ol' Triton so overjoyed to see humans?

Maybe it would have been more in-character to have him scowling down at anyone entering...and then, during the ride, a life-size audioanimatronic of the Sea King could lunge up from behind a boulder and fire thunderbolts over riders' heads while bellowing, "GET OFF MY CAROUSEL, HUMANS!!!" That would have been awesome.

Getting back to reality, King Triton's Carousel is a fun feature of Paradise Pier, and was actually one of the few opening-day DCA attractions suitable for small children. Its location -- tucked off to the side between California Screamin' and Toy Story Midway Mania -- keeps the waiting lines short, and that's good news for guests!
